Project Details

  • Project location:
    Tiergarten Berlin
  • Client:
Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development.
  • Time:
    2014-2017

Pedestrian suspension bridge

  • Load-bearing system:
    • Iron chains (early suspension elements) carry the deck in tension
    • Vertical hangers connect the chains to the wooden deck
  • Towers/pylons:
    • Cast iron, primarily architectural but also guiding the suspension system
  • Span: approx. 17 meters

The system follows the classic tension–compression principle:

  • Chains → tension
  • Deck → bending + distributed load
  • Pylons/anchorages → force redirection and transfer to the ground
Renovation and Modern Intervention

The bridge underwent a comprehensive restoration (2014–2017) led by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development.

Key measures included:

  • Replacement and reinforcement of corroded suspension chains
  • Structural stabilization of the pylons
  • Renewal of the deck while preserving the historic appearance
  • Integration of modern load-bearing safety standards
