Pedestrianbridge spanning the river Rhein
The Ludwig-Volk-Steg is designed as a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge with a slender steel deck.
- The deck is supported by inclined steel cables (stays) connected to a central pylon
- The cables act purely in tension, transferring vertical loads from the deck to the pylon
- The pylon carries these forces as compression and transfers them into the foundations
Material:
Steel for columns and deck, Full locked cables and spiral
strands, clamps
Structural characteristics:
- Fan-like cable arrangement from the pylon to the deck
- Efficient load distribution with minimal bending in the deck
- Lightweight appearance due to the dominance of tension elements
The system follows a classic cable-stayed load path:
- Deck → cables (tension) → pylon (compression) → foundation
This allows for:
- a slender deck design
- reduced material usage
- clear structural expression of forces
