- Load-bearing system:
- Iron chains (early suspension elements) carry the deck in tension
- Vertical hangers connect the chains to the wooden deck
- Towers/pylons:
- Cast iron, primarily architectural but also guiding the suspension system
- Span: approx. 17 meters
The system follows the classic tension–compression principle:
- Chains → tension
- Deck → bending + distributed load
- Pylons/anchorages → force redirection and transfer to the ground
Renovation and Modern Intervention
The bridge underwent a comprehensive restoration (2014–2017) led by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development.
Key measures included:
- Replacement and reinforcement of corroded suspension chains
- Structural stabilization of the pylons
- Renewal of the deck while preserving the historic appearance
- Integration of modern load-bearing safety standards
