with 9,000 m² PVC membrane
Movable Roof
The “movable ceiling” at Al Hazm Mall is part of a broader hybrid indoor–outdoor architectural system, rather than a single continuous retractable roof like in conventional malls.
Concept
The mall is designed to function as a climate-controlled open-air environment, combining:
- outdoor courtyards and promenades
- with selectively covered and adaptable spaces
This approach preserves the feel of a European-style boulevard while addressing Qatar’s extreme heat.
Movable / Retractable Roof System
In certain sections, the mall incorporates retractable or adjustable roofing elements, such as:
- sliding shading systems
- movable glass or membrane panels
- fixed structures (e.g., domes) combined with adaptable coverings
These systems allow:
- Opening during mild weather → natural light and open-air experience
- Closing during extreme heat or sandstorms → protection and thermal control
- Regulation of airflow as part of a larger ventilation strategy
Structural and Technical Aspects
- Large spans are achieved using steel support structures with lightweight materials (glass or tensile membranes)
- Key spaces, such as the central gallery, are covered by monumental glazed domes
- The movable systems are architecturally integrated, remaining visually discreet within the classical design language
Functional Role
The retractable roof is part of a microclimate control system, working together with:
- shading strategies
- passive and mechanical ventilation
- heat-reflective materials
