Dresden Central Station is the central hub of Saxony, and it‘s translucent membrane roof provides plenty of light for the historic building. The membrane roof was initially installed in 2006 based on an architectural concept by Foster+Partners.
For quality reasons, the 33.000 m² membrane had to be replaced. In addition to the membrane, new steel and glass Skylights have been installed above the funnels to prevent snow from sliding into the funnel and causing damage to the membrane. To avoid having no roof above the train station for a long time, the new membrane has been installed first and subsequently the old membrane removed. This installation method had been essential for the functionality of the main station during the construction period, allowing passengers to use the station without getting wet when boarding their trains. Situated in the city center, managing traffic, the traveller crowds and the closure periods for the rails have been major logistic challenges, which made this project a General Contractor’s task.
