Project Description
King Fahd Stadium is undergoing a comprehensive transformation to meet the requirements of future international sporting and entertainment events. A central element of the redevelopment is the renewal of its iconic tensile roof, whose original design was inspired by traditional Bedouin tents. The architectural concept preserves this distinctive identity while introducing an entirely new cable and membrane structure.
PFEIFER Structures was responsible for the controlled deconstruction of the existing roof structure and for supervising the procurement and installation of the new roof system. The company’s scope also includes the installation of the cable net and the PTFE membrane structures for both the main and inner roofs.
The new roof comprises a cable-net canopy covering approximately 36,000 m² and more than 85,000 m² of membrane across the complete roof system. Precise coordination of the cables, connections and individual membrane panels is essential to achieve the specified prestress, structural geometry and long-term stability of the large-span structure.
Through the combination of lightweight cable engineering and durable PTFE membrane materials, the renewed roof provides extensive shade while retaining the stadium’s characteristic silhouette. The work by PFEIFER Structures contributes to transforming the historic venue into a modern stadium designed for major international tournaments, including the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
