Project Description
Located in Vienna’s Prater, Stadionbad is one of Europe’s largest sports and leisure swimming facilities. To enable year-round training for professional athletes, the complex was expanded with an innovative moveable hall that encloses the 50-metre competition pool during the winter months while allowing it to operate as an open-air pool throughout the summer. This flexible concept creates a unique combination of indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities within a single structure.
PFEIFER Structures developed and delivered the complete drive system for the rail-mounted moveable hall, providing a highly specialized engineering solution for a structure measuring 64 × 31 × 8 metres and weighing approximately 450 tonnes. The hall is supported by four independently driven subframes, each equipped with heavy-duty drive motors, hydraulic lifting technology, and precision control systems that allow the entire building to travel 32 metres twice each year. Custom-designed wheel assemblies, integrated hydraulic lifting cylinders, and intelligent monitoring systems ensure accurate positioning, reliable operation, and even load distribution throughout every movement. The project demonstrates PFEIFER Structures’ expertise in combining structural engineering, mechanical systems, and advanced automation to realize complex movable structures with exceptional precision and long-term reliability.
