Project Description

SoFi Stadium is one of the world’s most technologically advanced sports and entertainment venues and home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. The stadium is internationally recognized for its remarkable 19.5-acre translucent roof—the largest cable-supported ETFE roof ever constructed—which defines the venue’s architectural identity while creating a comfortable environment for year-round events.

PFEIFER Structures played the major role in the engineering, fabrication, and installation of this extraordinary roof system. At the heart of the structure is a long-span double-grid cable net supported by an arching steel truss compression ring, creating a lightweight yet exceptionally efficient structural solution. Due to the scale and complexity of the roof, installation required a highly specialized cable jacking process to achieve the precise final geometry. The cable net is enclosed by more than 300 semi-translucent ETFE panels, allowing natural daylight to illuminate the stadium while providing effective weather protection. In addition, PFEIFER Structures engineered 46 operable ventilation panels integrated into the roof to enhance natural airflow and thermal comfort within the seating bowl. A further technical highlight is the custom-designed movable “picture frame” system, which seamlessly incorporates LED lighting into the transparent roof membrane, transforming the entire roof into the world’s largest integrated media display. The project stands as a benchmark for innovative structural engineering and demonstrates PFEIFER Structures’ expertise in delivering highly complex, large-scale steel and cable-supported structures.
