Movable Roof

The “movable ceiling” at Al Hazm Mall is part of a broader hybrid indoor–outdoor architectural system, rather than a single continuous retractable roof like in conventional malls.

Concept

The mall is designed to function as a climate-controlled open-air environment, combining:

  • outdoor courtyards and promenades
  • with selectively covered and adaptable spaces

This approach preserves the feel of a European-style boulevard while addressing Qatar’s extreme heat.

Movable / Retractable Roof System

In certain sections, the mall incorporates retractable or adjustable roofing elements, such as:

  • sliding shading systems
  • movable glass or membrane panels
  • fixed structures (e.g., domes) combined with adaptable coverings

These systems allow:

  • Opening during mild weather → natural light and open-air experience
  • Closing during extreme heat or sandstorms → protection and thermal control
  • Regulation of airflow as part of a larger ventilation strategy

Structural and Technical Aspects

  • Large spans are achieved using steel support structures with lightweight materials (glass or tensile membranes)
  • Key spaces, such as the central gallery, are covered by monumental glazed domes
  • The movable systems are architecturally integrated, remaining visually discreet within the classical design language

Functional Role

The retractable roof is part of a microclimate control system, working together with:

  • shading strategies
  • passive and mechanical ventilation
  • heat-reflective materials
