Project Description:
The “Die Schlange” (The Snake) foot and cycle bridge in Frankenberg, Saxony, creates a striking new connection between the historic town centre and the recreational landscape of the Zschopau floodplains. Stretching 262 metres, the bridge is characterized by its sweeping S-shaped alignment and elegant cable-stayed design, making it both a functional piece of infrastructure and an architectural landmark.
PFEIFER Structures supplied the fully locked main and stay cables for the bridge’s sophisticated cable-supported structural system. The bridge’s complex S-shaped alignment is carried by an inclined central steel pylon with spatially arranged stay cables supporting a torsion-resistant steel box girder. The fully locked cables provide high tensile capacity, outstanding corrosion protection, and a remarkably slender appearance while meeting the demanding geometric requirements of the structure. Integrated tuned mass dampers further enhance user comfort by minimizing pedestrian-induced vibrations.
