Project Description
The Energy and Future Storage facility in Heidelberg transforms a functional energy storage cylinder into a striking architectural landmark. Its multilayered façade concept is inspired by natural movement and combines differently coloured inner surfaces with tilted elliptical steel rings that wrap around the structure like dynamic energy loops.
PFEIFER Structures was responsible for the engineering, fabrication and installation of the complete steel and cable structure, extending from the base of the external spiral staircase to the rooftop. A precisely tensioned cable net spans between the elliptical steel rings and forms the supporting structure for the planned outer façade.
The final façade design features approximately 11,000 diamond-shaped plates made of thin stainless steel. Attached individually to the cable net, the plates are designed to rotate by up to 45 degrees in the wind, creating a constantly changing appearance. The plate façade has not yet been installed and is currently undergoing technical coordination.
