Project Description

The Public Shading Structures at Expo 2020 Dubai are among the most distinctive architectural features of the exhibition site. Inspired by the form of date palm trees, the sweeping funnel-shaped canopies provide welcome shade for visitors while creating a comfortable microclimate throughout the Thematic Districts. Covering approximately 96.000 m², the network of 53 large-scale structures combines iconic architecture with advanced lightweight engineering and sustainable urban design.

PFEIFER Structures served as the principal contractor and structural engineer for the complete public shading system, delivering the engineering, fabrication, and installation of all steel and tensile structures. The project comprised 53 architecturally unique shading canopies featuring complex steel frameworks and lightweight membrane elements, each individually engineered to withstand the demanding climatic conditions of the Arabian desert. The sophisticated structural design creates a dappled shading effect that protects pedestrians and indigenous planting while maintaining natural ventilation and daylight.
