Project Description

Mandai Bird Paradise is home to eight large walk-through aviaries that recreate natural habitats from different regions of the world. The expansive enclosures allow more than 3,500 birds from over 400 species to move freely within a protected, carefully landscaped environment.

PFEIFER Structures supplied and installed the complete steel, cable and tensile-mesh structures for the aviaries. A two-layer tensioned cable system forms the structural skeleton of each enclosure and is supported by 106 architecturally exposed steel columns reaching heights of up to 35 metres. Approximately 20 kilometres of cable structure support around 110,000 m² of tensile mesh, creating one of the world’s largest aviary enclosure systems.

To preserve the existing vegetation, the cable and mesh structures were erected above mature trees exclusively by specialised rope-access technicians. This demanding installation method allowed the large enclosures to be completed with minimal interference to the natural landscape.

PFEIFER Structures also designed, supplied and installed the approximately 3,600 m² PTFE membrane roof over the Sky Amphitheatre. The lightweight tensile structure provides weather protection for the audience while maintaining the open character of the venue used for avian presentations. Together, the cable, mesh and membrane structures combine engineering precision with a design that integrates harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.
