Project Description
The SMS Campus in Mönchengladbach is the new headquarters of SMS group, bringing together administration, engineering, and innovation within a contemporary and collaborative working environment. At the heart of the campus lies a spectacular central courtyard, covered by an award-winning transparent roof that unites five circularly arranged office buildings into a single, weather-protected meeting space for approximately 1.500 employees.
PFEIFER Structures was responsible for the engineering, fabrication, and installation of the campus’ iconic courtyard roof. Spanning 82 metres and covering an area of approximately 5.100 m², the impressive “Geiger Dome” appears to float 20 metres above the plaza. The lightweight roof structure is based on an intricate radial cable net weighing nearly 300 tonnes and incorporates 40 air-inflated ETFE cushions that provide daylight, weather protection, and an exceptional sense of openness. Developed with sophisticated cable engineering, the project demanded outstanding precision and meticulous installation. The result is a technically innovative and architecturally distinctive canopy that has become the defining feature of the SMS Campus.
