Project Description

Weinschloss Thaller, located in the rolling vineyards east of Graz, is a renowned winery and event venue where architecture, hospitality, and winemaking come together. To transform the historic courtyard into a flexible, year-round event space, a sophisticated retractable roof was developed that provides reliable weather protection while preserving the open character of the existing building.

PFEIFER Structures contributed to the realization of this innovative movable roof by delivering the precision-engineered steel structure that forms the basis of the folding system. The retractable canopy consists of ten membrane-covered steel frames connected by articulated joints, allowing the roof to fold into a compact parking position when opened. Rolling carriages running on integrated rails, together with a carefully engineered drive mechanism, enable the entire roof to be deployed efficiently while transferring all structural loads into the existing building with minimal intervention. Combining lightweight steel construction, membrane technology, and sophisticated movable engineering, the project creates a versatile, weather-independent venue while respecting the architectural heritage of the wine estate.
